We enable you to take direct measures on slippery roads in your area, to take preventive actions by alerting citizens or instructing road maintenance to act on slippery road segments.

Data from ordinary passenger cars in your neighborhood are now continuously reporting road conditions in real-time. This data is received by us and instantly made available to you in an easy-to-use web application.

Who is this service for?

This service is for local winter maintenance actors within monitoring or operations. The service provided is especially well suited for local actors to familiarize themselves with the NIRA product family, offering a free 60-day trial version for one municipality.

Use cases

Freezing detection

WRI Live View is used to get instant feedback from the vehicles, detecting friction deviations due to refreezing, hoarfrost or other sources of slipperiness. In this case, the roads were wet and surface temperature dropped below 0 degrees slowly during the day on one of the main highways in Sweden as well as several suburbs. The roads did experience slipperiness for 8 hours and using WRI the customer could take immediate action.

Action followup

During heavy weather such as snowfall the vehicles provide instant feedback on actions performed to see that they have the expected effect as well as prioritizing resources to big roads that experience slipperiness. The Live View provide a live snapshot of the road network and can be compared to previous road network snapshots. It allows a possibility to analyze the effect of the winter operations and the actions taken.

Need: Future-proofing their winter road maintenance

Application: RWS is responsible for all winter road maintenance on state roads. They make the planning themselves and make decisions about what to do and provide equipment, but they do not carry out ploughing/salting themselves. They are expected to keep a road clean all year round i.e. non-slippery.

They want to be able to see road status over their road network, get alarms if there is slipping somewhere but also improving forecasting using vehicle data. Winter actions follow up, what actions were performed and what were the results.

Need: Continuous friction monitoring to ensure that sub-contractors (road maintenance companies) provide the service level stipulated in the contracts. Continuous monitoring level the playing field, and shows the true rating of the services provided. Luck is less of a factor.
