Data collection - This is how it’s done

Sensor fusion
In cooperation with multiple car manufacturers, we install a sensor fusion application in regular passenger vehicles. The application smartly fuses information from existing sensors in the car and collects road surface data in a vehicle fleet of millions of vehicles.

Collect data
The key is that the algorithms used in the RSI applications makes it possible to collect a lot more data from the roads than has ever been done before, with traditional products using ABS or TCS interventions as the main data source. The NIRA longitudinal and non-linear slip algorithms can collect data in a variety of driving styles, meaning the road network coverage will be a on a completely different level.

Up-to date map
The anonymized data from the vehicles is sent to a server where it’s aggregated, analyzed and map matched can be used to provide a descriptive or even predictive map layer of any road segment. The map layers are created and published continuously, meaning RSI can provide an up-to date map at all times.

Combining data
By combining the connected vehicle data with other data sources, such as road weather, a descriptive and even predictive map can be distributed to cars, trucks and other vehicles, but also to road maintenance companies and road authorities to improve traffic safety on the roads.

The Road Surface Information data is made available in many different ways, via APIs and as an online service, but there is also a possibility to get the RSI data streamed directly via the HERE Marketplace.

OEMs, software application providers and road maintenance companies has the opportunity to easily use the data in a smooth and easy way and presents the opportunity for third party developers and OEMs, building applications for the vehicle industry of tomorrow.
